Get Real Hollywood

April 18, 2012 by

I am not even going to pretend that I know what it is like to get inside a guy’s head, but I do know this, we do approach life very differently at times, especially in the area of relationships. I can’t tell you how many times my female clients, when referring to their partners or boyfriends, will project how they deal and process life on to their significant others. I got news for you, “it won’t work.” Men do not think like the average girl. As an example, a woman may ask me, “do you think he really loves me but because he just lost his job and is in his cave that is why he has not called me for four days?”…“And do you think his silence really means he is looking at why he and I are not talking and do you think he will want to go to therapy and really at look at why he pushes me away like he does?” Some of these questions are back to back and in the same conversation as we women process in a variety of ways. It’s not that men won’t ask themselves questions, but they may not be so quick to delve into all these possibilities in one quick swoop. It’s usually a little more black and white and simplistic in the approach.

Usually men do not even think about these areas we women venture into as the mind of a man. More times than not, if a man says he does not want a relationship, he means it. There is no hidden meaning behind it. Remember the book and movie, “He’s Just Not That into You?” The concept was so popular because we as women are always delving deeper into what it really means…

In approaching this subject this week, I found it amazing how some men thought they would get in trouble if they thought like a man and others say thinking like a man is more multi-dimensional. So my message for you ladies, is not to stereotype your man, but to try to understand his mind not from yours but from his point of view. Sometimes if we can step out of ourselves and listen instead of talking, understand instead of projecting and open to another’s point of view instead of controlling, we can have a much better communication and relationship. So as we explore this topic from Steve Harvey’s THINK LIKE A MAN, let us all look a little closer at ourselves and have compassion for our differences and look at new ways we can evolve and relate to each other – thinking, feeling… and then some!

Classic Hollywood

May 27, 2011 by

This last year when Tony Curtis died, my intern at the time said, “Who is Tony Curtis?” I knew then that these greats would be lost forever if people who are true fans of Classic Hollywood didn’t keep their memory and contribution to Hollywood alive. Every month we will feature a Classic Hollywood celebrity in this section. It is my hope that you will learn more about the old Hollywood stars and get a chance to check out some of their films.

This Month’s Feature: Marilyn Monroe

This year is the 50thM/sup> anniversary of Marilyn Monroe’s death. June 1st is Marilyn’s birthday. In honor of her life, LifeBites is getting behind a book and soon to be movie and promotion, called “No City for Dreaming.” Go to nocityfordreaming.com for more details.

One of my all time favorite movies, “Some Like it Hot” 1959, starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemon. Directed by Billy Wilder.

BIO:

Probably the most celebrated of all actresses, Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jeane Mortenson on Tuesday, June 1st, 1926, in Los Angeles General Hospital. Prior to her birth, Marilyn’s father bought a motorcycle and headed north to San Francisco, abandoning the family in Los Angeles. Marilyn grew up not knowing for sure who her father really was. Her mother, Gladys, had entered into several relationships, further confusing her daughter as to who it was who fathered her. Afterward, Gladys gave Norma Jeane (Marilyn) the name of Baker, a boyfriend she had before Mortenson. Poverty was a constant companion to Gladys and Norma. Gladys, who was extremely attractive and worked for RKO Studios as a film cutter, suffered from mental illness and was in and out of mental institutions for the rest of her life, and because of that Norma Jeane spent time in foster homes. When she was nine she was placed in an orphanage where she was to stay for the next two years. Upon being released from the orphanage, she went to yet another foster home. In 1942, at the age of 16, Norma Jeane married 21-year-old aircraft plant worker James Dougherty. The marriage only lasted four years, and they divorced in 1946. By this time Marilyn began to model swimsuits and bleached her hair blonde. Various shots made their way into the public eye, where some were eventually seen by RKO Pictures head Howard Hughes. He offered Marilyn a screen test, but an agent suggested that 20th Century-Fox would be the better choice for her, since it was a much bigger and more prestigious studio. She was signed to a contract at $125 per week for a six-month period and that was increased by $25 per week at the end of that time when her contract was lengthened. Frank Sinatra was his “godfather”. He produced movies with Tom Cruise, Christopher Reeve, Madonna, and others. He also has known failure, bankruptcy, and fear. Movies have always been there to comfort and entertain us, particularly in tough times. The book and the community he is building are dedicated to saving movies from extinction by quite literally Bringing Back the Old Hollywood. His name is Stephen Simon. Sex Drugs And Rock n Roll Roadie - Movie Poster

“Roadie” Written by Gerald Cuesta and Michael Cuesta, and Directed by Michael Cuesta

For over 20 years, Jimmy Testagross has lived his childhood dream: being a roadie for his childhood heroes, Blue Oyster Cult. But the band’s Arena-Rock glory days are a distant memory. County fairs and club gigs pay the bills. And Jimmy has become a casualty of these leaner times. With no place to go, no job prospects, and no real skills outside of being a roadie, Jimmy needs to regroup. So he returns to his childhood home in Queens, New York.

There, he revisits old relationships: his ailing, widower mom, a high school crush, a former nemesis and, most importantly, his relationship with himself. Jimmy, the middle-aged man-child, has never grown up. He still carries the resentments and frustrations of his youth, and has allowed them to fester and define who and what he is. Confronted with his mother’s illness, Jimmy has a choice: let go of the past and take responsibility for both himself and the woman who raised and now needs him. Or continue to live a life of lies and frustration.

Summary written by Gerald Cuesta

LifeBites Question

What is your childhood DREAM? Have to let it go or are you creating the energy and passion to bring your dream to fruition?

Marilyn Monroe is one of the most famous and yet misunderstood icons of the century. In this exciting portrayal of Marilyn Monroe, Michelle Williams captures the essence of this beautiful actress.

Oscar® winners Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts reunite for a dramatic comedy about how the hard knocks from today’s recession inspire one everyday guy to undergo a personal reinvention: Larry Crowne.

Until he was downsized, affable, amiable Larry Crowne (Hanks) was a superstar team leader at the big-box company where he’s worked since his time in the Navy. Underwater on his mortgage and unclear on what to do with his suddenly free days, Larry heads to his local college to start over. There he becomes part of a colorful community of outcasts, also-rans and the overlooked all trying to find a better future for themselves…often moving around town in a herd of scooters. In his public-speaking class, Larry develops an unexpected crush on his teacher Mercedes Tainot (Roberts), who has lost as much passion for teaching as she has for her husband.

The simple guy who has every reason to think his life has stalled will come to learn an unexpected lesson: when you think everything worth having has passed you by, you just might discover your reason to live.

From one of my all time favorite directors, Dennis Dugan comes “Just Go With It.” This charming two-hours of fun is about a plastic surgeon, romancing a much younger schoolteacher, who enlists his loyal assistant to pretend to be his soon to be ex-wife, in order to cover up a careless lie. When more lies backfire, the assistant’s kids become involved, and everyone heads off for a weekend in Hawaii that will change all their lives.

“The Social Network” Opens in Theaters, October 1st, 2010 – Directed by Aaron Sorkin

On a fall night in 2003, Harvard undergrad and computer programming genius Mark Zuckerberg sits down at his computer and heatedly begins working on a new idea. In a fury of blogging and programming, what begins in his dorm room soon becomes a global social network and a revolution in communication. A mere six years and 500 million friends later, Mark Zuckerberg is the youngest billionaire in history… but for this entrepreneur, success leads to both personal and legal complications. From director David Fincher and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin comes “The Social Network,” a film that proves you don’t get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies.

The film is produced by Scott Rudin, Dana Brunetti, Michael De Luca, and Ceán Chaffin and based on the book “The Accidental Billionaires” by Ben Mezrich.

  1. Do you think you can be a nice person and a successful person at the same time?
  2. Do you think it is inevitable that you will make enemies if you are going to be a success?
  3. If you were Mark Zuckerberg, what would you do with all your money?
