Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman’s Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia
By Elizabeth Gilbert
Gilbert (of The Last American Man) grafts the structure of romantic fiction upon the inquiries of reporting in this sprawling yet methodical travelogue of soul-searching and self-discovery. Plagued with despair after a nasty divorce, the author, in her early 30s, divides a year equally among three dissimilar countries, exploring her competing urges for earthly delights and divine transcendence. First, pleasure: savoring Italy’s buffet of delights — the world’s best pizza, free-flowing wine and dashing conversation partners — Gilbert consumes la dolce vita as spiritual succor. ‘I came to Italy pinched and thin,’ she writes, but soon fills out in waist and soul. Then, prayer and ascetic rigor: seeking communion with the divine at a sacred ashram in India, Gilbert emulates the ways of yogis in grueling hours of meditation, struggling to still her churning mind. Finally, a balancing act in Bali, where Gilbert tries for equipoise ‘betwixt and between’ realms, studies with a merry medicine man and plunges into a charged love affair. Sustaining a chatty, conspiratorial tone, Gilbert fully engages readers in the year’s cultural and emotional tapestry — conveying rapture with infectious brio, recalling anguish with touching candor — as she details her exotic tableau with history, anecdote and impression.” Publishers Weekly (Starred Review) (Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.)

Enchanted Love – Marianne Williamson
Three of Marianne Williamson’s previous bestsellers — A Return to Love, A Woman’s Worth, and Illuminata — explored the issue of relationships. Now, in this deeply personal collection of essays, prayers, and self-reflection, she turns to romantic love.
In Illuminata, Williamson wrote that “we experience God to the extent to which we love, forgive, and focus on the good in others and ourselves.” Now, in Enchanted Love, she writes that “enchanted partnership begins with the conscious understanding, on the part of two people, that the purpose of their relationship is not so much material as spiritual, and the internal skills demanded by it are prodigious.” High romance, she says, “is not about past or future. It is not about practicality. It is not about society or worldly routines. It is an audacious ride to the center of what is, at the heart of every person. It is a bold and masterful inquiry into what two people really are and how we might become, while still on earth, the angels who reside within us.”
Marianne Williamson is an internationally acclaimed spiritual teacher. Her latest book, The Age of Miracles hit #2 on the New York Times Bestseller list. Among her other 9 published books, four of them — including A Return to Love — were #1 New York Times Bestsellers. A Return to Love is considered a must-read of The New Spirituality. A paragraph from that book, beginning “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure” — often misattributed to Nelson Mandela’s Inaugural address – is considered an anthem for a contemporary generation of seekers.
Marianne’s other books include Everyday Grace, A Woman’s Worth, Illuminata, Healing the Soul of America, The Gift of Change and Emma and Mommy Talk to God.
Marianne does a daily podcast on Oprah.com called MiracleThought.
She has been a popular guest on television programs such as Oprah, Larry King Live, Good Morning America and Charlie Rose.
Marianne is a native of Houston, Texas. In 1989, she founded Project Angel Food, a meals-on-wheels program that serves home bound people with AIDS in the Los Angeles area. Today, Project Angel Food serves over 1,000 people daily. Marianne also co-founded The Peace Alliance, a grass roots campaign supporting legislation to establish a U. S. Department of Peace.
In December 2006, a NEWSWEEK magazine poll named Marianne Williamson one of the fifty most influential baby boomers. According to Time magazine, “Yoga, the Cabala and Marianne Williamson have been taken up by those seeking a relationship with God that is not strictly tethered to Christianity.”

This month’s BookBites we have decided to feature several of my favorite titles.
The first book from Don Miguel is a wonderful book, Mastery of Love that talks about learning to love YOU and get out of the drama in relationships.
Secrets of Attraction is probably my favorite love book this last year in that it talks about energy as it relates to LOVE. As Shakespeare says, “there is nothing either good or bad – but thinking makes it so.”
The last book being featured is from our own LifeBites expert, Dr. Debra Mandel, Dump That Chump!, a book that came out several years ago, but a fun and informative book — The title says it all!
Enjoy — Nina
Mastery Of Love – By Don Miguel Ruiz
In The Mastery of Love, Don Miguel Ruiz examines the fear-based beliefs and assumptions that undermine love and lead to suffering and drama in our relationships. Using teachings from the three Toltec Masteries – Awareness, Transformation, and Love – as a foundation, he exposes the fallacies and misplaced expectations about love that permeate most relationships. He gracefully shares his wisdom through delightful and engaging stories that clarify each point and bring his message to life. Some of the themes the book explores include the destructive war of control; why domestication and the image of perfection lead to self-rejection; the dual tracks of fear and love; body needs versus mind needs; and how to finally accept and forgive ourselves and others.
Secrets of Attraction: The Universal Laws of Love, Sex and Romance – By Sandra Anne Taylor
The author reveals how the Universal Laws and even quantum physics and personal energy fields actually direct the course of relationship destinies. Sandra Anne Taylor reveals how the Universal Law directs the course of your relationships. Energy is the centre of all life, and your energy is the centre of all you attract. With this guide, discover why your energy has more impact on relationships than looks, intellect or financial status.
Dump That Chump: From Doormat to Dive in only Nine Steps – a Guide to Getting over Mr. Wrong – By Dr. Debra Mandel
Too many intelligent, attractive women these days find themselves trapped in destructive, unhealthy relationships, or simply settling for far less than they deserve.
In Dump That Chump!, psychologist, author, columnist, and speaker Dr. Debra Mandel offers an essential nine-step program that will enable you to recognize the “red flags” and walk away from unhealthy relationships. Combining sensitivity with a positive “take charge” approach, Dr. Mandel provides checklists, quizzes, true stories, and exercises to help you restore your self-esteem and rid yourself of guilt and shame—so you can Dump That Chump! once and for all, and turn your love life around.
Questions to ask yourself:
1. How committed are you to finding love?
2. How committed are you to loving yourself?
3. How committed are you to your relationship?

This I Believe II: More Personal Philosophies of Remarkable Men and Women
For this month’s book bites, we are profiling the second collection from the This I Believe series – This I Believe II: More Personal Philosophies of Remarkable Men and Women. We are particularly charmed by this book, as the stories and voices are as individual as those who wrote them and each one reveals a unique life lesson. This book will truly make you ponder – what do I believe?
And, be sure to check out New York Times bestselling first book, This I Believe: The Personal Philosophies of Remarkable Men and Women
In this second collection derived from the extraordinarily popular and influential National Public Radio program This I Believe, seventy-five essayists—ranging from famous to previously unknown—completing the thought that begins the book’s title. With contributors who run the gamut from cellist Yo-Yo Ma to ordinary folks like a diner waitress, an Iraq War veteran, a farmer, a new husband, and many others, This I Believe II, like the first New York Times bestselling collection, showcases moving and irresistible essays.
Included are Sister Helen Prejean writing about learning what she truly believes through watching her own actions, singer Jimmie Dale Gilmore writing about a hard-won wisdom based on being generous to others, and Robert Fulghum writing about dancing all the dances for as long as he can. Readers will also find wonderful and surprising essays about forgiveness, personal integrity, and honoring life and change.
